Watamu

Marine-protected paradise where sea turtles nest and coral gardens thrive.

Watamu is Kenya’s pioneering marine conservation success story. The Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve protects some of East Africa’s most vibrant coral reefs, making snorkeling and diving here exceptional. Sea turtles—green, hawksbill, and olive ridley—nest on these beaches, and Local Ocean Conservation works tirelessly to protect them.

The vibe is barefoot and unhurried. Watamu lacks the resort development of Diani, which keeps it quieter and more locally rooted. Days revolve around the tides—snorkeling at high tide when coral heads are submerged, exploring tidal pools at low tide, kayaking through the mangrove channels of Mida Creek (part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). Nearby, the 12th-16th century Gede Ruins sit wrapped in coastal forest—a haunting reminder of Swahili trading towns that once thrived here before being mysteriously abandoned.

Watamu is for travelers who value marine life as much as terrestrial wildlife, and who prefer quiet beauty over crowds.
