Safari by Train, Beach by Choice
This journey moves at your rhythm — balancing wildlife encounters with coastal calm, adventure with rest, structure with freedom.
Begin in Nairobi, where conservation meets urban energy. Board Kenya’s modern SGR train for a scenic ride to the wild landscapes of Tsavo or Amboseli. Then continue to Diani Beach, where powder-white sand and turquoise water invite you to simply be. The beauty of this itinerary is its flexibility. Spend an extra day with Nairobi’s elephants and giraffes, or head straight to safari. Choose Tsavo’s red-earth wilderness or Amboseli’s Kilimanjaro views. Stay three nights on the coast or seven — the journey shapes itself around you.
Ideal for couples seeking balance, solo travelers wanting ease, and families ready for adventure without the rush.
Welcome to Kenya. Your private driver meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfers you to your Nairobi accommodation. Tonight is yours to rest, adjust to the time zone, and let the anticipation build. Your Nomari guide will connect with you to confirm tomorrow’s plans and answer any questions.
Accommodation: Nairobi (hotel or boutique guesthouse)
Meals: Breakfast (if arrival is early enough)
Activities: Airport transfer, rest and orientation
Nairobi often gets overlooked as just a stopover, but it holds some of Kenya’s most meaningful conservation stories. If you choose to spend the day here, we’ve curated experiences that connect you with the city’s heart.
Morning: Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (11:00–12:00), where baby elephants orphaned by poaching are raised with extraordinary care. Watch them play, feed, and eventually return to the wild. It’s impossible not to be moved.
Midday: Head to the Giraffe Centre, where endangered Rothschild giraffes lean their long necks down to take pellets from your hand. The experience is joyful, gentle, and surprisingly intimate.
Afternoon (optional): Explore the Karen Blixen Museum, where the author of Out of Africa once lived, or visit Kazuri Beads, a women’s cooperative creating hand-painted ceramic jewelry. We’re happy to recommend other cultural stops based on your interests.
Alternatively, if you prefer to head straight to safari, we can arrange your SGR train for tomorrow morning and skip this day entirely.
Accommodation: Nairobi
Meals: Breakfast
Activities: Optional Nairobi conservation experiences
This morning, your safari begins — not in a vehicle, but on rails.
Early transfer to Nairobi’s modern SGR station for the 08:00 departure. Settle into your seat as the train glides southeast through changing landscapes: urban sprawl giving way to acacia woodlands, distant hills, glimpses of wildlife from the window.
By noon, you arrive at Voi Terminus. Your private safari vehicle and guide are waiting. The drive to your lodge takes about an hour through Tsavo’s signature red-earth wilderness — vast, ancient, and teeming with life.
Check in, have lunch, then head out for your first game drive. Tsavo is Kenya’s largest national park, known for its red elephants (dust-covered from the iron-rich soil), dramatic baobabs, and wide-open horizons that make you feel small in the best way.
Accommodation: Tsavo National Park or Lumo Conservancy (lodge or tented camp)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activities: SGR train journey, transfer to lodge, afternoon game drive
Today belongs to the wild.
Early morning game drive when animals are most active — elephants moving in family groups, lions returning from night hunts, giraffes browsing at sunrise. Return to the lodge for breakfast with views over the bush.
The middle of the day is yours: rest by the pool, read in the shade, or continue exploring with your guide. Many lodges overlook waterholes where wildlife comes to drink, so even downtime offers front-row seats to nature.
Late afternoon, head out again for golden-hour game drives. Your guide reads the landscape, tracking fresh prints and following radio chatter from other guides. Every drive is different. Every sighting feels earned.
Accommodation: Tsavo (same lodge)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activities: Full-day game drives with flexible timing
One last morning in the bush, then it’s time to trade savanna for shoreline.
After breakfast, transfer to Voi SGR Station and board the train to Mombasa Terminus. The journey retraces your route, giving you time to reflect on everything you’ve seen.
Upon arrival in Mombasa, your coastal driver meets you for the scenic two-hour drive south to Diani Beach. The landscape shifts to coconut palms, coral cliffs, and the first glimpses of turquoise water. Check into your beachfront accommodation. Sink your feet into powder-white sand. Let the sound of the Indian Ocean reset your rhythm.
Accommodation: Diani Beach (beachfront hotel or resort)
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Activities: SGR train to Mombasa, coastal transfer, beach arrival
These days are entirely yours to design. Some travelers want nothing more than a sunbed, a good book, and the tide coming in and out. Others crave exploration. Diani offers both.
Relaxation options:
Adventure options:
Stay three nights. Stay seven. Stay until you’ve had enough — though most people find that’s harder to reach than expected. When you’re ready to leave, we arrange your transfer to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport for your onward flight.
Accommodation: Diani Beach
Meals: Breakfast daily (other meals depend on accommodation type)
Activities: Flexible — as much or as little as you wish
If your heart is set on seeing Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak rising above the plains, Amboseli National Park is your destination.
Instead of taking the train to Voi, you’ll board at Nairobi and disembark at Emali Station. From there, your driver collects you for a 2.5-hour road transfer to Amboseli.
The journey involves more driving than the Tsavo route, but the reward is iconic: Africa’s highest mountain as your backdrop, large elephant herds moving across open grasslands, and some of the continent’s most photographed landscapes. Amboseli is smaller and more intimate than Tsavo, with concentrated wildlife viewing around seasonal swamps. It’s the choice for those who prioritize scenery and that postcard-perfect Kilimanjaro shot.
Note: Kilimanjaro is often shrouded in clouds by midday, so early morning game drives offer the clearest views.
Best Time to Visit:
Year-round destination. Dry seasons (January–March, June–October) offer optimal safari conditions. Coast is beautiful all year, though March–May sees occasional rain.
Fitness Level:
Easy to moderate. Game drives involve seated travel. Beach activities are as active or relaxed as you choose.
What to Pack:
For safari: neutral-colored clothing, layers for cool mornings, sun protection, binoculars, camera. For coast: swimwear, light cotton clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, sandals.
Health:
Malaria prophylaxis recommended for safari and coastal areas. Yellow fever vaccination required if arriving from endemic countries.
Why the SGR Train?
Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway is modern, comfortable, and offers a uniquely local perspective. It’s also more sustainable than flying and connects you to the landscape in a way air travel doesn’t. Plus, it’s an experience in itself.
