Lake Manyara National Park

Compact park where forest, lake, and escarpment create dramatic variety in a small space.

Lake Manyara is small but rewarding—a park that packs incredible diversity into just 330 square kilometers. The entrance takes you through groundwater forest (a rarity in Tanzania), where blue monkeys and baboons swing through the canopy and elephants browse in dappled shade.

The lake itself dominates the park’s eastern side, its soda-alkaline waters attracting thousands of flamingos (when conditions are right) and over 400 bird species. Hippos wallow in pools near the lakeshore. Buffalo herds graze the floodplains.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, though sightings are never guaranteed—these lions have adapted to lounging in acacia branches, possibly to escape ground-level insects or simply to catch a breeze. The park makes an excellent half-day or overnight stop between Tarangire and Ngorongoro, adding habitat variety without adding significant travel time.
