Arusha National Park

Gentle gateway park where walking safaris and crater-lake views ease you into East Africa.

Close to Arusha town (Tanzania’s safari gateway), this small park offers a soft introduction to safari—or a peaceful finale before flying home. The landscapes are varied: Momella Lakes shimmer in different shades depending on mineral content, Mount Meru rises dramatically in the background, and the Ngurdoto Crater offers a mini-Ngorongoro experience.

Arusha National Park is one of the few places in northern Tanzania where walking safaris are permitted, making it ideal for travelers who want to stretch their legs and experience wildlife at a slower pace. You’ll see giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and hundreds of bird species. The park doesn’t have the big predators (lions, leopards), which makes walking safer and family-friendly. It’s restful, photogenic, and surprisingly engaging for a park that’s often overlooked.
