Kenya Safari: Mara, Lake Naivasha & Amboseli

8 Days Where Observation Becomes Participation

Journey Overview

This journey moves through three of Kenya’s most distinctive landscapes — the legendary Maasai Mara, where predators and prey play out ancient dramas; Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley, where you’ll bike, ride horses, and walk among wildlife; and Amboseli National Park, where elephants move beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Along the way, you’ll experience Maasai culture, hands-on adventure activities, and a scenic train journey that connects the highlands to the coast. This itinerary balances classic safari with active exploration and cultural connection — designed for travelers who want variety, depth, and time to truly absorb each place.

Day-by-Day Journey

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Your driver meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfers you to your accommodation in Nairobi.

Check in and settle in. Rest after your flight, or if you arrive early, explore the grounds and prepare for the journey ahead.

Accommodation: Nairobi
Meals: Dinner, Breakfast

Day 2: Nairobi → Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, depart for the Maasai Mara — Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve and one of Africa’s greatest safari destinations.

The drive takes you through the Great Rift Valley with stunning escarpment views. Arrive at your lodge or tented camp for lunch, then head out for your first afternoon game drive in the reserve. The Mara’s density and diversity of wildlife is unmatched. Within hours, you may encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and if you’re fortunate, leopards or cheetahs.

Accommodation: Maasai Mara (lodge or tented camp)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activities: Road transfer to Maasai Mara, afternoon game drive

Day 3: Full Day in Maasai Mara

Spend the entire day exploring the Maasai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. The Mara’s rolling plains and acacia-dotted landscapes reveal new scenes with each drive. Your guide tracks animal movements, positions you for optimal sightings, and shares knowledge accumulated over years in the bush.

This is where safari dreams are made — predators on the hunt, river crossings during migration season, and vast herds moving across horizons that never quite end.

Accommodation: Maasai Mara (lodge or tented camp)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activities: Full-day game drives with flexible timing

Day 4: Maasai Mara → Lake Naivasha

After a final morning game drive, depart the Mara and head to Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley. The landscape shifts as you descend from the highlands — volcanic formations, escarpment views, and eventually the glimmer of the lake itself.

Arrive at your lodge for lunch. The afternoon is yours to relax by the lake, spot birds from the shoreline, or simply rest after several days of safari intensity.

Accommodation: Lake Naivasha (lodge)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Lake Naivasha — Active Adventures

Today offers hands-on exploration of the Naivasha area. Morning: Depart for Hell’s Gate National Park for a guided bike trek through dramatic rock formations, geothermal vents, and past grazing wildlife. One of the few parks where cycling is permitted, this two-hour journey puts you at eye level with zebras, giraffes, and the landscape itself. Afternoon: After lunch at the lodge, enjoy a two-hour horse riding experience through the surrounding landscape, followed by a pottery session where you’ll learn traditional techniques from local artisans.

Day 6: Lake Naivasha → Amboseli National Park

After breakfast, depart for Amboseli National Park. The drive takes you through changing landscapes as you approach the park, with Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak gradually dominating the horizon.

Day 7: Full Day in Amboseli

Spend the day exploring Amboseli’s diverse ecosystems — open plains, acacia woodlands, swamps where hippos gather, and the dramatic setting beneath Kilimanjaro. Morning and afternoon game drives offer the best wildlife viewing and clearest mountain views. Kilimanjaro is often cloud-covered by midday, so early light is precious. Between drives, visit a Maasai village for a cultural experience — meet community members, learn about traditional ways of life, and support the community directly through your visit.

This journey connects to onward travel — whether flying out from Mombasa, continuing to Diani Beach for coastal relaxation, or other destinations.
